Are You Ready To Live In A Resort Town?

What it really takes to make your dream a reality. Most everyone has a secret dream to take escape the daily grind to a more laid-back life in a beautiful resort.   Sipping on cocktails.  Skiing the slopes.  Hitting the Beach.  Just having fun. Many locals decide to take the plunge after college or before starting a “real career.”  But that’s certainly changed; you’ll find many middle-aged divorcees starting over ‘on their terms.’  When those corporate executives start pondering their “real life” as it stands, they usally begin questioning if their chosen path was a smart choice afterall.  Many people have taken the plunge to great success.  Meet some of those risk-takers below…   CONNIE HAMMOND (ASPEN) [SUMMARY] Vivamus a tellus. Buy Local When You Shop

(Photo by Jeremy Swanson) Take a stroll down Winter Wonderland Lane, do a little window shopping, then step inside and open up your wallet!  One of the big draws to resort towns are all the local boutiques offering unique, special and sometimes pricey goods to tourists and locals alike. You definitely need to brace yourself for a resort-town shopping extravaganza.  Purchases can easily rack up into the thousands.  Regardless if your splurge is extravagant or conservative, those purchases can become a jam-packed memory filled with nostalgia and joy. A special momento or two that serves as a reminder of a wonderful vacation with a loved one or of the time you spent as a resort town as a local will bring lasting joy. Lately, there’s been much buzz about how the big name brands are pushing the small, local retailers out of business, causing rents to sky-rocket which in turn, makes staying in business tougher for the local shop owner.  […]

WORK: Can Working Really Be This Much Fun?

Resort locals are a special breed. They make the necessary sacrifices to live in places they love because they know life is short — they heed the call of a life lived fully. But working in a resort town can be tricky. As the old resort-town adage goes: ‘you either own three homes or work three jobs.’ Whether you’ve just graduated from college and want to enjoy a season or two before launching your “real career,” you’ve quit your job and have no idea what you’re going to do next, or you’re a long-time local who’s stayin’ put forever, you can live the dream. We understand the desire to live a life on your own terms, and we have experienced the magnetic pull that resort towns exude. As a new graduate, as long as you’re flexible and more interested in ‘living the dream’ vs. making a living at this point […]

Attending The Winter X-Games

Attending the X Games is not as easy as it might seem. The word “free” tends to act like a giant human-magnet, and the crowds can be difficult to navigate. To make the most of your X Games esperience, proper planning is crucial. Instructions Take public transportation, even if that means driving to a BART or MUNI station. Do not drive into San Francisco unless you enjoy sitting in traffic and driving in circles. Parking in the city is difficult on even the slowest of days. The brand new MUNI E-line will go right through the X Games site. Dress for a full day out. Check the weather forecast, then prepare for both hot and cold weather. A windbreaker is perfect for that cold Embarcadero breeze, even when it’s sunny. And don’t forget your hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Determine the events you want to watch (see the schedule on the […]

My Friends Give Me A Headache!

It’s not what you think. I love my friends. I actually have the best friends in the world. They are my biggest supporters and such a joy to be around. They are smart. They are kind. They are funny. They are thoughtful and considerate. The problem isn’t their personalities. The problem is that they challenge me. My friends ask the tough questions. They expect more from me because they know I can deliver. They care about me and want me to succeed. They want me to be the best I can be. Because of that, I love them. But my head hurts sometimes after one of these loving encounters. And I am glad it does.

Colorado Beauty: The Main Reason We Love It Here

“Discovering this idyllic place, we find ourselves filled with a yearning to linger here, where time stands still and beauty overwhelms.” It never gets dull living in Colorado, especially where your senses are concerned. Day after day, locals have the advantage of inhaling breathtaking views that fill them up.  One of the top reasons, if not the #1 reason, that most people move to a Colorado resort town is for an outdoor lifestyle that includes the majestic Colorado Rockies. Seasons of Glory Whatever the weather, you’ll be amazed at the transcending beauty that permeates your senses and at times, overwhelms. During foggy mornings, the clouds hover in the valley like billowy puffs of smoke, creating the perfect backdrop for cuddling on the couch with a loved one or reading a book with a hot cup of tension tamer.  These mornings typically happen during off-season, as if they serve to remind the locals to slow down and rest up for […]

10 Resort Fashion Trends in 2011

By Phoebe Fulkerson at Steamboat Local 1. Ski Town Camouflage is not what you think. This year the single most embraced color trend in New York is that of crisp, cool whites. Good news for men and women who love the classic white dress shirt: this is your season. For the more daring, fashion designers recommend white on white on white; layers of sheer fabrics, white denim, white leather, soft fabric, white T-shirts, white suits for the men, white stockings for the ladies, worn with white shoes, and/or boots. With all of the snow out there all I can say is, be careful crossing the street! 2. Red is this year’s choice for those not wishing to blend in with the snow.  …read more

When You Get the Wind Knocked Out of You...Breathe.

The other night, I got the wind knocked out of me. And I literally lost my breath. I had the excruciating pleasure of falling down a flight of stairs. It wasn’t a rolling tumble by any means. It was the type of fall that hurt. I stepped on the edge of the carpeted stair, my feet flew out from under me and my back crashed with a forceful thump against the treads. I slid down the rest of the stairs, caught my breath, checked myself, and cried. Actually, I sobbed. Granted, it was 2 am, I was tired from being on the computer all day long, and mostly I was scared. I was hurrying down the stairs (and not paying attention) to lock up before hitting the hay. I was scared because it reminded me that if I fell and did indeed get hurt, no one would even know. Everyone […]
